Visit New Albany and explore a wide array of attractions for both residents and tourists, including historic sites, shopping venues, art galleries, the Tanglefoot Trail, festivals, and delicious food.

A friend of mine recently told me that back in “ye olden days”, when the railroads and other infrastructures were being built, one of the first positions hired was the cook. Build a good place to eat…and they will come. Every community needs one or more good Eatin spots for folks to gather, fellowship, and have a good meal.

New Albany has many unique hometown restaurants to choose from. I recently visited Tallahatchie Gourmet, established in 2002. It’s just off Bankhead and in the heart of downtown. They offer plate lunches, menu items, daily specials, and also take home items like ready to cook casseroles, salads, dips, and more.

I’ve received several recommendations on what to order and decided on the top three. These are all specials not listed on the menu. They were available to order after 5pm on a Friday when I visited. You can call ahead or check their page for updates.

Menu Showcase:
🔥 Shrimp & Grits
🔥 Filet 8oz
🔥Cheese Ring

I started with the Cheese Ring. It was highly recommended as an appetizer. I’m not sure if it’s available all day, but you could ask. It’s mostly sharp cheddar with green onion, pecans, mayo, Kyan, and topped with strawberry jelly. This was way better than most cheese balls I’ve had. It’s a delicious and fun appetizer for one or more to share. Pair it with some wine or a tropical drink and you’ve got the beginnings of a festive evening.

The Shrimp & Grits have a base of cheese grits, topped with sautéed shrimp in a light brute blanc sauce, bacon pieces, cheese, and green onions.

The Shrimp & grits were extremely savory and definitely qualifies as comfort food. The shrimp were plump and plentiful. Enough shrimp for almost every bit. It already had good saturation, meaning I didn’t have to churn the dish to get all the goodies blended with the grits very much.

The Filet was prepared medium as I requested and came with two sides. The fillet was flavoured with their special house blend of spices and finished with creamy butter that added a luxurious silkiness, melting into every fibre of the tender fillet. It had a bold taste from its exterior seasoning that melded with the natural flavours of the beef. With each savoury morsel, it was evident that this fillet was a true culinary delight from first bite to last. I paired my filet with an expertly made Old Fashioned.

For my two sides, I chose the house made potato salad and broccoli salad. The potato salad, I believe was a silky mayo based version with pieces of potato mixed in.

The broccoli salad was beautiful, with pieces of onion, pecan, and maybe some small fruit to sweeten it up a bit. As an afterthought, I believe a more simple side salad would have paired better. Only meaning, that the bold flavor of the filet should take center stage.

While I was there, the staff seemed to work with perfect timing. I was greeted with a smile, waited on periodically, and offered a to-go glass for my trip home. Whether you live in town, or a bit further out like me, definitely put the Tallahatchie Gourmet restaurant on your list of places to see.

Everyone’s taste is different. My goal is to give you a glimpse of what I see and experience so you can judge for yourselves if the atmosphere and menu are right for you. So when you visit, be sure to tell the crew I recommended you. Happy Trails!!
