Folks who work and live in rural areas still need mom-and-pop country stores like Opie’s for that sense of community and familiarity that big chain stores just can’t offer. They not only provide essential goods and services but also serve as a gathering place where neighbors catch up on local news, share stories, and foster a strong sense of belonging.
You can depend on Opie’s Country Store, whether you’re leaving for work at 4:30 am and need to pick up a quick breakfast or just prefer somewhere close for a leisurely made-to-order breakfast, lunch, or supper.
Ms Geraldine Kimble is shown slicing my deli meats and cheese. She takes customer orders for her specialty cakes and pie and also posts the daily blue plate specials on her page at Geraldine Kimble.

The store offers a variety of grocery items and antiques for sale, but most customers are there for the home cooked meals. For those wanting to dine in, they have a few tables inside and a picnic table on the front porch.

From the menu, you can order a deli sandwich with fresh sliced meats and cheese, or one of their popular burgers. They also have a different blue plate special each day. A few favorites are Friday’s fish plates, meatloaf with country veggies, and the hand-breaded chicken tender plate.
What I’ve ordered:
🔥Cheeseburger
🔥Catfish Plate
🥪 Deli Sandwiches:
- Rag Bologna
- Smoked Turkey
- Cajun Roast Beef
🍎Apple Dumpling for dessert
I’ve visited a couple times recently since discovering Opie’s Country Store. During my first visit on Friday I had the Catfish filet plate with the trimmings and also their dressed cheeseburger.

The catfish plate included catfish fillets, pickles, onion, fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, dessert, and drink for about $9. The fish plate was delicious and the apple dumpling for dessert was a nice finishing touch! Oh, and with the hushpuppies you have a choice of regular or jalapeño. I went spicy! It gave them a little extra flavor to enjoy.
The cheeseburger was a handful, juicy and well made. While there, I noticed the burger was probably the 2nd most requested item, right after the catfish plate. The hamburger plate goes for about $6 and cheeseburger plate $6.50.

Although I haven’t tried it yet, the hand battered chicken strip plate is also a local favorite at $6.50. Three strips per plate.
Their selection of deli meats are quite extensive for a small store. Everything from turkey and ham to more exotic country selections like liver cheese and souse meat.
Me and the family also ordered the Rag Bologna, Smoked Turkey, and Cajun Roast Beef. All with Hoop Cheese and mayo. The rag bologna was mine, but I did get a taste of the other two. All were sliced and prepared while I waited.

During my visit, the store/restaurant was filled with locals and area workers taking a lunch break. With a quick peek in the kitchen, I saw a former classmate, Michelle, lining up plates of meatloaf, veggies, and cornbread, while Ms. Geraldine was at the meat slicer preparing our sandwiches.

The entire crew was working together like a well oiled machine greatly appreciated by the folks of Evergreen! Visit soon and let the crew know that Jeff Jones recommended you. Happy trails!!
Everyone’s taste is different. My goal is to give you a glimpse of what I see and experience so you can judge for yourselves if the atmosphere and menu are right for you.
